Critique 5: Mobile Learning in the 21st Century!
I previously wrote a blog titled, “M-Learning” and it was on a video I had watched from you tube titled, “M-Learning Works”. I just read a follow up article on the same topic of ‘M-Learning’ written by S.J. Geddes and the article can be found if you click this link http://knowledgetree.flexiblelearning.net.au/edition06/download/geddes.pdf.

“As the quantity of information available increases exponentially and the general pace of life accelerates, the ability to navigate, access, validate and share information will be a pivotal skill in an increasingly complex environment. This skill will affect every part of a person’s existence, including everything from their ability to remain competitive in the workplace, to their ability to make personal choices about holidays, social activities and personal development projects” (Geddes, S.J. 2004). What this means is basically as a society we are becoming more and more reliant on new technologies and technologic devices which have presented themselves with the promise of making our lives run smoother. If we as teachers fail to teach our students about these new technologies surely they will be at a disadvantage in a technologic world.
The article is on the topic ‘M-Learning’ and the definition defined within the article is that M-Learning is the acquisition of any knowledge and skill through using mobile technology, anywhere, anytime, that results in an alteration in behaviour. The term ‘mobile technology’ refers to any device that is designed to provide access to information in any location, or while the user is on the move. Some examples of such devices are; iPods, GPS systems, playstation consoles and mobile phones are just a few.
The article talks about different approaches, modes and devices to extending learning, i.e. listening to podcasts via an mp3 player to extend the learning outside the classroom. If mobile devices are used correctly and wisely by teachers the learning will be extended to a whole new level which originally would not have occurred. The article does not only say how the classroom can benefit if these devices are incorporated into their learning to extend their learning but essentially it says that such devices are a way to get students who may not be enthusiastic about their learning to become engaged in the learning environment via devices that are of interest to them. Another most obvious advantage of an M-Learning environment is the ability to access information where it would not have been possible to before without a mobile device. Therefore in relation to education, student learning can take place more frequently and where ever the student goes outside the classroom.
Overall I think that mobile learning is an invaluable source of teaching methods and learning devices. I think that the possibilities made with mobile learning are endless and this article touches on a few of the great ways in which to incorporate mobile learning within the classroom. Mobile learning is one way for students to be able to relate to the content in an interactive way. I think if I was given the opportunity to use some sources of m-learning such as uploading a vodcast of a presentation I had done to my mobile phone to show my parents or friends it would have been a strong incentive to try little bit harder. It is shown that students work a lot harder and their motivation is uplifted when their work is on display. I believe M-learning will be a great addition in the classroom.
